Habitat
Subtropical and tropical lowland moist forest. From sea-level - 1,100 m, although sometimes to 1,400 m.

Range (Guide)

Indonesia (B) (NB), Papua New Guinea (B) (NB).

New Guinea; also recorded on Batanta I, off north-western New Guinea.

Population
Estimated population is unknown (2010) and decreasing.

Status NT
Habitat loss through logging is the main threat.

Subspecies
Has frequently been merged into superficially similar genus Accipiter, but now considered part of old endemic Australasian clade, related instead to Erythrotriorchis and others.
