Habitat
Subtropical and tropical lowland moist forest. From sea-level - 1,100 m, although sometimes to 1,400 m.
Indonesia (B) (NB), Papua New Guinea (B) (NB).
New Guinea; also recorded on Batanta I, off north-western New Guinea.
 
Population
Estimated population is unknown (2010) and decreasing.
Status NT
Habitat loss through logging is the main threat.

Has frequently been merged into superficially similar genus Accipiter , but now considered part of old endemic Australasian clade, related instead to Erythrotriorchis and others.
