Subspecies
Closely related to Collared Sparrowhawk (Accipiter cirrocephalus). Most authorities consider to form superspecies with Collared Sparrowhawk (Accipiter cirrocephalus), New Britain Sparrowhawk (Accipiter brachyurus) and possibly Vinous-breasted Sparrowhawk (Accipiter rhodogaster).
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
- erythrauchen Gray, 1861 - Motrotai, Halmahera, Bacan and Obi (northern Moluccas).
- ceramensis (Schlegel, 1862) - Buru, Ambon and Seram (southern Moluccas).
