Voice
A far-carrying high-pitched 2 - 3 note whistle, similar to that of Crested Serpent-Eagle (Spilornis cheela).

Subspecies
Taxonomic status uncertain and sometimes considered conspecific with Crested Serpent-Eagle (Spilornis cheela). Currently considered to form superspecies with Crested Serpent-Eagle (Spilornis cheela), Great Nicobar Serpent-Eagle (Spilornis klossi), Mountain Serpent-Eagle (Spilornis kinabaluensis) and Philippine Serpent-Eagle (Spilornis holospilus). Subspecies sulaensis poorly differentiated, and perhaps of questionable validity.

The following 2 subspecies are recognised:

rufipectus Gould, 1858 - Sulawesi, and islands of Salayar, Muna and Butung, off southern Sulawesi.
sulaensis (Schlegel, 1866) - Banggai and Sula Is, off eastern Sulawesi.
