Subtropical and tropical montane moist forest. From 1,500 - 3,050 m.

Subspecies
Possible subspecies subrubra merged with klossi because of overlapping measurements and lack of significant colour differences.

The following 3 subspecies are recognised:

  • rubra (Schlegel, 1871)   -  Western New Guinea, in Arfak Mts.
  • klossi Ogilvie-Grant, 1913   -  West-central New Guinea, from Weyland Mts to Oranje Mts.
  • telefolminensis (Gilliard, 1961)   -  Central New Guinea, in Victor Emmanuel and Hindenburg Mts and Tari Gap.
