Habitat
Marshy and partly flooded forest, usually undisturbed alluvial forest, but also hill forest, dense secondary growth and mangroves. From sea-level - 350 m.

Range (Guide)
Indonesia (B).

Population
Estimated population is 2,500 - 9,999 (2010) and decreasing.

Status VU
Habitat destruction and degradation through loggings, oil and mineral exploration, hunting and trade, are the main threats.

Western Crowned Pigeon (Goura cristata) [XC116878]
     by id from Waigeo, Raja Ampat Islands, West Papua, camp off of Orobiai River, Indonesia (call)

Subspecies
Members of genus unique amongst pigeons in having no gallbladder. Also lack oil-gland and have reticulate scaling on the strong, thick legs; 16 rectrices. They have no obvious close relatives. Hybridizes with Victoria Crowned-Pigeon (Goura victoria) along R Siriwo in north-western New Guinea.

The following 2 subspecies are recognised:

  • minor Schlegel, 1864   -  Western Papuan Is (Misool, Salawati, Batanta, Waigeo). Also Seram (southern Moluccas), where probably introduced.
  • cristata (Pallas, 1764)   -  North-western New Guinea, from Vogelkop east to Etna Bay and R Siriwo.


Similar Species
Southern Crowned-Pigeon (Goura scheepmakeri), to south-east of range, has maroon underparts. Victoria Crowned-Pigeon (Goura victoria), to north-east of range, has maroon breast and white-tipped crest.
