Subspecies
Shows certain affinities with the large Grey-green Fruit-dove (Ptilinopus purpuratus) species-group. Considered to be most closely allied to Beautiful Fruit-Dove (Ptilinopus pulchellus), and perhaps also closely related to Blue-capped Fruit-Dove (Ptilinopus monacha).

The following 5 subspecies are recognised:

  • trigeminus Salvadori, 1875   -  Salawati and western coast of Vogelkop (north-western New Guinea).
  • geminus Salvadori, 1875   -  Yapen I and northern New Guinea from head of Geelvink Bay east to Takar.
  • quadrigeminus Meyer, AB, 1890   -  Northern New Guinea between Humboldt Bay and Astrolabe Bay, including Manam I and Kairiru I.
  • huonensis Meyer, AB, 1892   -  Northern coast of eastern New Guinea from Huon Bay to Goodenough Bay.
  • coronulatus Gray, 1858   -  Aru Is and southern coast of New Guinea from R Mimika to Milne Bay.
