Subspecies
Formerly placed in genus Leucotreron and a later proposal returned all members of that group to Ptilinopus, but placed present species in subgenus Rhamphiculus along with other Philippine and Sulawesi forms Flame-breasted Fruit-dove (Ramphiculus marchei), Cream-bellied Fruit-dove (Ramphiculus merrilli), Yellow-breasted Fruit-dove (Ramphiculus occipitalis), Maroon-chinned Fruit-Dove (Ramphiculus epius) and Maroon-chinned Fruit-Dove (Ramphiculus epius). Present species is most closely allied to Yellow-breasted Fruit-dove (Ramphiculus occipitalis).

The following 3 subspecies are recognised:

  • fischeri (Brüggemann, 1876)   -  Northern Sulawesi.
  • centralis Meyer, AB, 1903   -  Mountains of central and south-eastern Sulawesi.
  • meridionalis (Meyer, AB & Wiglesworth, 1893)   -  Lompobattang Massif in south-western Sulawesi. Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Lompobattang Fruit-dove (Ramphiculus meridionalis).
