Subspecies
Forms superspecies with Large-tailed Nightjar (Caprimulgus macrurus), Jerdon's Nightjar (Caprimulgus atripennis) and Philippine Nightjar (Caprimulgus manillensis), and all were formerly considered conspecific. In recent years has commonly been lumped in Philippine Nightjar (Caprimulgus manillensis), but differs in both voice and morphology.
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
celebensis Ogilvie-Grant, 1894 - Northern and central-eastern Sulawesi; probably also Buton I in south-east.
jungei Neumann, 1939 - Sula Is, where currently known from Taliabu and Mangole.
