Habitat
Subtropical and tropical montane moist forest. From 2062 - 3600 m.
Indonesia (B), Papua New Guinea (B).
Central New Guinea: known only from Wissel Lakes area, Nassau Range, northern slope of Mt Wilhelmina and Victor Emanuel Mts.

Estimated population is unknown (2010).

Subspecies
Formerly treated as a subspecies of Mountain Owlet-Nightjar (Aegotheles albertisi ), but is apparently a sibling species, replacing it at higher elevations.
