Habitat
Primary and lightly disturbed rainforest, rich with lianas, ferns, palms and epiphytic plants, and occasionally, disturbed riverine forest and forest edge. From 100 - 1,600 m.

Range (Guide)
Indonesia (B).

Northern and north-central Sulawesi.
 
Population
Estimated population is 2,500 - 9,999 (2010) and decreasing.

Status VU
Forest habitat loss, degradation and fragmentation through logging, land clearance for settlement, is the main threat.

Voice
A single nasal, hoarse, hissing shriek lasting about 1.8 seconds and delivered infrequently every 5-7 minutes.

Subspecies
Forms superspecies with Australian Masked-Owl (Tyto novaehollandiae), Golden Masked-Owl (Tyto aurantia), Manus Masked Owl (Tyto manusi), Lesser Masked-Owl (Tyto sororcula) and Taliabu Masked-Owl (Tyto nigrobrunnea). Until recently, widely considered to include Taliabu Masked-Owl (Tyto nigrobrunnea) as a subspecies. Species name often misspelt inexpectata.

No subspecies.

Similar Species
Sulawesi Owl (Tyto rosenbergii) is much larger, with dusky facial disc and upperparts finely spotted white. There are two morphs of this species, of which the darker is most difficult to differentiate from Sulawesi Owl (Tyto rosenbergii).
