Habitat destruction is the main threat. Trapping is a potential threat.

Subspecies
Forms a superspecies with Yellow-throated Hanging-Parrot (Loriculus pusillus) and Wallace's Hanging-Parrot (Loriculus flosculus). Sometimes considered conspecific with Wallace's Hanging-Parrot (Loriculus flosculus).
