Estimated population is 110,000 (2010).

Subspecies
May form a superspecies with Blue-naped Parrot (Tanygnathus lucionensis). Nominate subspecies shows much variation, some apparently clinal. Now considered to include proposed subspecies viridipennis, djampeae, floris, obiensis, batchianensis, fuliginosus and insularum.

The following 5 subspecies are recognised:

  • megalorynchos (Boddaert, 1783)   -  Talaud, Sangihe and islands off north, eastern and southern Sulawesi south to Flores (Lesser Sundas) and east through northern and central Moluccas to western Papuan Is and other islands off western Irian Jaya; present also on Balut and Sarangani off Mindanao (south-eastern Philippines), where possibly introduced; specimens from northern Sulawesi may have been wanderers or introductions, while sight records remain open to question.
  • affinis Wallace, 1863   -  Southern Moluccas.
  • sumbensis Meyer, AB, 1882   -  Sumba.
  • hellmayri Mayr, 1944   -  Western Timor and Semao I.
  • subaffinis Sclater, PL, 1883   -  Tanimbar Is.
