Subspecies
Controversy concerning application of correct genus name: junior synonym Opopsitta sometimes erroneously used.

The following 7 subspecies are recognised:

  • melanogenia (von Rosenberg, HKB, 1866)   -  Aru Is. Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Dusky-cheeked Fig-parrot (Cyclopsitta melanogenia).
  • gulielmitertii (Schlegel, 1866)   -  Salawati and western Vogelkop, New Guinea.
  • nigrifrons Reichenow, 1891   -  Northern New Guinea. Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Black-fronted Fig-parrot (Cyclopsitta nigrifrons).
  • ramuensis (Neumann, 1915)   -  North-eastern New Guinea around R Ramu.
  • fuscifrons Salvadori, 1876   -  Southern New Guinea.
  • amabilis (Reichenow, 1891)   -  Huon Peninsula eastwards, Papua New Guinea. Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Creamy-breasted Fig-parrot (Cyclopsitta amabilis).
  • suavissima Sclater, PL, 1876   -  South-eastern Papua New Guinea.
