Subspecies
Forms a superspecies with Geelvink Pygmy-Parrot (Micropsitta geelvinkiana) and Buff-faced Pygmy-Parrot (Micropsitta pusio).

The following 3 subspecies are recognised:

keiensis (Salvadori, 1875) - Kai Is and Aru Is.
chloroxantha Oberholser, 1917 - Western Papuan Is, Vogelkop and Onin Peninsula, western Irian Jaya.
viridipectus (Rothschild, 1911) - Southern New Guinea.
