Estimated population is unknown (2010) and decreasing.

Status NT
Habitat destruction and trapping are the main threats.

Subspecies
Sometimes placed in Trichoglossus or even Neopsittacus. Validity of subspecies rubripileum questionable, and claimed differences may be due to age or individual variation.

The following 3 subspecies are recognised:

iris (Temminck, 1835) - Western Timor.
rubripileum (Salvadori, 1891) - Eastern Timor.
wetterensis (Hellmayr, 1912) - Wetar.
