Habitat
Subtropical and tropical lowland moist forest. From sea-level - 500 m.
Indonesia (B).
Population
Estimated population is 8,200 - 21,400 (2010) and decreasing.
Status EN
Habitat loss through small-holder agricultural encroachment into primary forest and (illegal) commercial logging, trapping for cage-bird trade, are the main threats.

Subspecies
Forms a superspecies with Violet-necked Lory (Eos squamata ), Red Lory (Eos bornea ), Blue-streaked Lory (Eos reticulata ), Black-winged Lory (Eos cyanogenia ) and Blue-eared Lory (Eos semilarvata ).
The following 3 subspecies are recognised:
challengeri Salvadori, 1891 - Miangas I, north of Sulawesi.
talautensis Meyer, AB & Wiglesworth, 1894 - Talaud Is.
histrio (Müller, 1776) - Sangihe I, Siau I and Ruang I.
