Habitat
Subtropical and tropical moist lowland forest, temperate forest. From 600 - 2,800 m.
Nepal and eastern Himalayas to Myanmar, Thailand, Annam and Hainan. Winters south to Sumatra, Java and Borneo.

Subspecies
Often placed in genus Hierococcyx, along with other hawk-cuckoos, on grounds of notable morphological differences from Cuculus.
Not recognised as a species by BirdLife International. Considered a subspecies of Malay Hawk-cuckoo (Hierococcyx fugax).
Considered by some authors to be a subspecies of Malay Hawk-cuckoo (Hierococcyx fugax).
No subspecies.
