Voice
Like a police whistle, lower in pitch than Yellow-billed Kingfisher (Syma torotoro).

Subspecies
Forms a superspecies with Yellow-billed Kingfisher (Syma torotoro), with which has possibly hybridized.
The following 3 subspecies are recognised:
- wellsi Salvadori, 1896 - Western New Guinea, in Snow Mts and Weyland Mts.
- sellamontis Reichenow, 1919 - North-eastern New Guinea, in mountains of Huon Peninsula.
- megarhyncha Salvadori, 1896 - Central and south-eastern New Guinea, from Sudirman Range to Owen Stanley Range.
