Northern Moluccas, on Morotai, Halmahera, Ternate, Tidore, Moti, Bacan, Obilatu, Obi, Damar and Ngelengele.

Estimated population is unknown (2010).

Voice
A warbling 'tu-tu-tuk'. Less vocal than most other kningfishers.

Subspecies
Genus often merged into Halcyon. Forms a superspecies with Forest Kingfisher (Todiramphus macleayii), Lazuli Kingfisher (Todiramphus lazuli), New Britain Kingfisher (Todiramphus albonotatus), Ultramarine Kingfisher (Todiramphus leucopygius) and Vanuatu Kingfisher (Todiramphus farquhari). Formerly considered conspecific with Lazuli Kingfisher (Todiramphus lazuli).

No subspecies.
