Subspecies
Genus sometimes merged into Halcyon. In the past, genus name given as Ramphalcyon, but Pelargopsis has priority. Forms a superspecies with Stork-billed Kingfisher (Pelargopsis capensis).

The following 3 subspecies are recognised:

melanorhyncha (Temminck, 1826) - Sulawesi and associated islands (Bangka, Manadotua, Lembeh, Togian Is, Dodepo, Wowoni, Kabaena, Muna, Butung, Labuandata, Salayar).
dichrorhyncha Meyer, AB & Wiglesworth, 1896 - Banggai Is.
eutreptorhyncha Hartert, 1898 - Sula Is.
