Habitat
Primary and tall secondary lowland forest and drier hill forest, mixed plantations, crops. From 850 - 1,000 m.

Range (Guide)
Indonesia (B).

Population
Estimated population is unknown (2010) and decreasing.

Status LC
Forest habitat destruction is the main threat.

Voice
Fairly quiet. Call is 3 - 4 muted, descending notes.

Subspecies
Distinctive, with no close relatives. Validity of subspecies modesta has been questioned and may be inseparable from nominate.

The following 3 subspecies are recognised:

  • sanghirensis Sharpe, 1868   -  Sangihe Is (Sangihe, Siau), off northern Sulawesi. Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Sangihe Lilac Kingfisher (Cittura sanghirensis).
  • cyanotis (Temminck, 1824)   -  Northern Sulawesi and Lembeh I.
  • modesta Stresemann, 1938   -  South-central and south-eastern Sulawesi.
