Estimated population is unknown (2010) and decreasing.
Status EN
Habitat destruction due to illegal logging and conversion to agriculture, forest fires are the main threats.

Subspecies
Thought by some to be closely related to Western Long-tailed Hornbill (Horizocerus albocristatus), which is sometimes included in present genus, but plumage and voice markedly distinct within context of family.
