Subspecies
May form a superspecies with Black-streaked Puffbird (Malacoptila fulvogularis) and Moustached Puffbird (Malacoptila mystacalis). Birds from south-eastern Nicaragua to western Panama sometimes separated as subspecies fuliginosa, but this name probably based on an aberrant bird and these populations are indistinguishable from inornata. Birds from Pacific coast of Chocó, north-western Colombia, described as subspecies chocoana, inseparable from panamensis.
The following 4 subspecies are recognised:
inornata (Du Bus de Gisignies, 1847) - Caribbean slope from south-eastern Mexico (northern Chiapas, eastern Tabasco) to western Panama (including Bocas del Toro).
panamensis Lafresnaye, 1847 - Pacific slope from south-western Costa Rica to north-western Colombia.
magdalenae Todd, 1943 - Magdalena Valley (west-central Colombia).
poliopis Sclater, PL, 1862 - South-western Colombia and western Ecuador.
