Nest
In a hole excavated in a bees' nests, arboreal termite nests, rotten trees and at the base of a large fern.
Subspecies
Relationships unclear, and species remains very poorly known. Subspecies detersus possibly inseparable from hayii.
The following 4 subspecies are recognised:
detersus Deignan, 1960 - Southern Myanmar (extreme southern Tenasserim) and adjacent peninsular Thailand (south to Trang). Considered by some authors to be a subspecies of Malay Brown Barbet (Caloramphus hayii).
hayii (J. E. Gray, 1831) - Malay Peninsula and Sumatra. Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Malay Brown Barbet (Caloramphus hayii).
