First Described (Guide)
Temminck, 1832

Habitat
Broadleaved lowland evergreen forest, gardens and cacao plantations, in areas with adjacent primary forest. From sea-level - 900 m.

Range (Guide)
Brunei Darussalam (B), Indonesia (B), Malaysia (B), Thailand (B).

Forest of lowland southern peninsular Thailand, possibly adjacent Myanmar, and Peninsular Malaysia (except south), Sumatra and Borneo.
 
Population
Estimated population is unknown (2010) and decreasing.

Status NT
Habitat destruction and degradation due to illegal logging and land conversion, fires, are the main threats.

Subspecies
Closest relatives are probably Yellow-rumped Honeyguide (Indicator xanthonotus) and Yellow-footed Honeyguide (Melignomon eisentrauti). Thought to have derived from early Asian invasion of Indicator from Africa, and thus from same ancestral stock as Yellow-rumped Honeyguide (Indicator xanthonotus). Bright yellow in plumage and short outer rectrix exhibited by both Asian species, and this combination otherwise shared only with African Yellow-footed Honeyguide (Melignomon eisentrauti).

No subspecies.
