Subspecies
Some authors include present species in a superspecies with Grey-breasted Partridge (Arborophila orientalis) and Bar-backed Partridge (Arborophila brunneopectus), and all three are sometimes considered conspecific. Others attribute morphological similarities to convergent evolution. Sometimes Sichuan Partridge (Arborophila rufipectus) or Red-breasted Partridge (Arborophila hyperythra), or both, also included in the superspecies.
The following 3 subspecies are recognised:
javanica (Gmelin, 1879) - Mountains of western Java.
bartelsi Siebers, 1929 - Mountains of west-central Java.
lawuana Bartels, 1938 - Mountains of east-central Java.
