Proposed subspecies ablutum, described from Tamansari (Banjoewangi), in eastern Java, subsumed within nominate.

The following 4 subspecies are recognised:

• sanguinolentum Temminck & Laugier, 1829   -  Southern Sumatra (Lampung, two records), Java and Bali.
• wilhelminae Büttikofer, 1892   -  Sumba, in Lesser Sundas. Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Sumba Flowerpecker (Dicaeum wilhelminae).
• rhodopygiale Rensch, 1928   -  Flores.
• hanieli Hellmayr, 1912   -  Timor. Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Timor Flowerpecker (Dicaeum hanieli).
