Subspecies
Closely related to and possibly forming a superspecies with Yellow-shouldered Blackbird (Agelaius xanthomus).

The following 2 subspecies are recognised:

humeralis (Vigors, 1827) - Cuba, including larger cays on northern coast, and some outlying islands (e.g. Jardines de la Reina Archipelago). Also western Hispaniola (western Haiti).
scopulus Garrido, 1970 - Cayo Cantiles (east of I of Pines), off south-western Cuba.
