Black-crowned Tanager (Phaenicophilus palmarum) [XC213507]
by Ian Davies from Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic (call)
Subspecies
No subspecies.
Recent molecular-genetic studies suggest that this genus and Nesospingus, Chlorospingus and Spindalis form a monophyletic clade that is sister to several New World warbler (Parulidae) genera (including Dendroica, Basileuterus and Vermivora), and are not closely related to other genera of present family. This species forms a superspecies with Grey-crowned Palm-Tanager (Phaenicophilus poliocephalus) and sometimes treated as conspecific. Hybridization between them occurs.
