Habitat
Boreal forest, temperate forest.

Range (Guide)
Anguilla, Antigua And Barbuda, Aruba, Bahamas, Barbados, Belize, Bolivia, Canada (B), Cayman Islands, Colombia, Costa Rica, Cuba, Dominica, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guadeloupe, Guatemala, Haiti, Honduras, Jamaica (NB), Martinique, Mexico, Montserrat, Netherlands Antilles, Nicaragua, Panama, Peru, Puerto Rico, St Kitts And Nevis, St Lucia, St Pierre and Miquelon (B) (P), St Vincent and The Grenadines, Trinidad and Tobago, Turks and Caicos Islands, USA (B), Venezuela, Virgin Islands (British) (NB), Virgin Islands (U.S.) (NB).

Vagrant to Faroe Islands, Ireland, United Kingdom.

Breeds in central and southern Canada (from north-eastern British Columbia, extreme south-eastern Yukon and south-western Northwest Territories east to Newfoundland and Nova Scotia) and southern in eastern USA to Gulf states (excluding Gulf coastal region). Migrates to region from Gulf of Mexico coast and Florida southern throughout Middle America and Caribbean to north-western South America (mainly in Andes south to Peru), wintering less commonly also on southern North American Atlantic coast and in Baja California.
 
Population
Estimated population is 14,000,000 (2010).

Subspecies
No subspecies.

Closely related to Dendroica and has sometimes been placed in that genus. Has hybridized with Cerulean Warbler (Setophaga cerulea) and Blackburnian Warbler (Setophaga fusca).
