Habitat
Dense understorey of moist montane broadleaf forest. Above 1,300 m. Occasionally in pine forest where there is a very well-developed broadleaf understorey.
Dominican Republic (B) (NB), Haiti (B) (NB).
Population
Estimated population is 2,500 - 9,999 (2010) and decreasing.
Status VU
Habitat destruction through deforestation for agriculture and timber is the main threat.

Voice
A loud, fluty series of 'tu-re-oo' and 'cho-ho-cho' calls. Gurgling notes and a loud 'wheury-wheury-wheury' alarm call.

Subspecies
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
swalesi (Wetmore, 1927) - Southern Haiti and south-western Dominican Republic.
dodae Graves, GR & Olson, 1986 - Central Dominican Republic.
Similar Species
Red-legged Thrush (Turdus plumbeus ) is paler above, lacks red on underparts and has red legs.
