Habitat
Isolated offshore mangrove islets, humid evergreen or semi-deciduous hardwood forests and other low-lying forests. From sea-level - 1,500 m.

Anguilla (B), Antigua And Barbuda (B), Bahamas (B), Belize (B), Cayman Islands (B), Colombia (B), Costa Rica (B), Cuba (B), Dominican Republic (B), Guadeloupe (B), Haiti (B), Honduras (B), Jamaica (B) (NB), Mexico (B), Nicaragua (B), Panama (B), Puerto Rico (B), USA (B), Virgin Islands (British) (B) (NB), Virgin Islands (U.S.) (B) (NB).

Vagrant to Dominica, Martinique, St Kitts And Nevis, St Lucia, St Vincent and The Grenadines.

Florida Keys, Bahamas, Greater and Lesser Antilles as far southern as Antigua; also Caribbean islands off coast of Central America, from Yucatán to north-western Panama.
 
Population
Estimated population is 550,000 (2010) and decreasing.

Status NT
Habitat destruction, illegal hunting, collision with man-made objects and pesticides are the main threats.

Subspecies
Closely related to Scaly-naped Pigeon (Patagioenas squamosa) although markings on head and neck are totally different, rest of plumage rather similar and songs spectrographically very close. They overlap in parts of their ranges but tend to occupy different habitats.

No subspecies.
