Subspecies
Has been considered conspecific with Puerto Rican Lizard-cuckoo (Coccyzus vieilloti) and Jamaican Lizard-cuckoo (Coccyzus vetula). Population of Saona I has sometimes been separated in subspecies saonae.

The following 2 subspecies are recognised:

longirostris (Hermann, 1783) - Hispaniola and Saona I.
petersi (Richmond & Swales, 1924) - La Mahotiere and Gonâve I.
