Winter range south to eastern Panama, northern Colombia, Venezuela, Guyana, Galapagos Is and the Caribbean to Trinidad.

Subspecies
Forms a superspecies with Crested Kingfisher (Megaceryle lugubris), Giant Kingfisher (Megaceryle maxima) and Ringed Kingfisher (Megaceryle torquata). Proposed subspecies caurina on basis of larger size is unwarranted due to variation across entire range.
