Estimated population is unknown (2010) and decreasing.

Status NT
Habitat destruction and degradation is the main threat.

Subspecies
Forms a superspecies with Prairie Warbler (Setophaga discolor) and sometimes regarded as conspecific, although such treatment not supported by recent phylogenetic study.

The following 3 subspecies are recognised:

nelsoni (Bangs, 1919) - Swan Is (north of Honduras), in western Caribbean.
vitellina Cory, 1886 - Grand Cayman I.
crawfordi (Nicoll, 1904) - Little Cayman I and Cayman Brac.
