Habitat
Subtropical and tropical moist montane forest. From 600 - 2,600 m.

Range (Guide)
Brazil, Colombia, Guyana, Suriname, Venezuela.

Estimated population is unknown (2010).

Subspecies
Has been suggested that subspecies caucae merits elevation to species rank, but it is morphologically only moderately distinct.

The following 8 subspecies are recognised:

  • sanctaemartae (Todd, 1913)   -  Northern Colombia (Santa Marta).
  • caucae (Chapman, 1914)   -  South-western Colombia.
  • olivater (Lafresnaye, 1848)   -  Mountains of northern and western Venezuela and adjacent Colombia.
  • paraquensis Phelps & Phelps Jr, 1946   -  Cerro Paraque (southern Venezuela).
  • kemptoni Phelps & Phelps Jr, 1955   -  Cerro de la Neblina (southern Venezuela).
  • duidae Chapman, 1929   -  Southern Venezuela (north-western Bolí­var, northern Amazonas).
  • ptaritepui Phelps & Phelps Jr, 1946   -  South-eastern Venezuela (south-eastern Bolí­var).
  • roraimae Salvin & Godman, 1884   -  South-eastern Venezuela, western Guyana and adjacent extreme northern Brazil.
