Habitat
Subtropical and tropical moist lowland and swamp forest. From sea-level - 1,500 m.

Range (Guide)
Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, French Guiana, Guyana, Peru, Suriname, Venezuela.

Population
Estimated population is unknown (2010).

Subspecies
Racial assignment of birds from Venezuela tentative. Currently included in acutirostris but apparently unlike typical specimens of that subspecies. Specimens from Guyana also included with acutirostris but possibly belong to hellmayri. Further research is required.

The following 3 subspecies are recognised:

  • acutirostris Chapman, 1923   -  Western Guyana, southern Venezuela (southern Amazonas, Bolí­var) and south-eastern Colombia (southern from Caquetá and Vaupés) south to north-eastern Peru.
  • hellmayri Todd, 1925   -  Surinam and French Guiana.
  • tenuirostris Pelzeln, 1859   -  South-eastern Peru, Amazonian Brazil (south of R Amazon) and northern Bolivia (Pando, north-western La Paz, northern Santa Cruz).
