Subspecies
Subspecies canescens formerly included in Tropical Pewee (Contopus cinereus).

The following 2 subspecies are recognised:

nigrescens (Sclater & Salvin, 1880) - Locally on eastern slope of Andes in Ecuador and northern and southern Peru; possibly also extreme southern Colombia.
canescens (Chapman, 1926) - Disjunctly in southern Guyana and eastern Amazonian Brazil.
