Habitat
Tall vegetation in swamps and flooded grasslands, and occasionally in dry savannas. From sea-level - 2,200 m.
Bolivia (B), Brazil (B), Colombia (B), French Guiana (B), Guyana (B), Paraguay (B), Suriname (B), Venezuela (B).
Vagrant to Argentina (NB).
Population
Estimated population is unknown (2010).
Status LC
Habitat loss and hunting are the main threats.

Subspecies
Some authors suggest that subspecies gigantea may merit treatment as separate species.
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
- undulata (Boddaert, 1783) - Western and eastern Colombia; Venezuela to extreme northern Brazil and probably east to the Guianas.
- gigantea (Temminck, 1826) - Eastern Bolivia, Paraguay and south-eastern Brazil; probably also Uruguay and north-eastern Argentina.
