Habitat
Subtropical and tropical montane moist forest. From 700 - 3,600 m, occasionally down to 180 m.

Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, Guyana, Peru, Venezuela.

Estimated population is unknown (2010).

Subspecies
Possibly closest to Mountain Trogon (Trogon mexicanus), Elegant Trogon (Trogon elegans), Collared Trogon (Trogon collaris), Black-throated Trogon (Trogon rufus) and Blue-crowned Trogon (Trogon curucui). DNA studies suggest that Elegant Trogon (Trogon elegans), Collared Trogon (Trogon collaris) and Black-throated Trogon (Trogon rufus) may be nearest relatives.

The following 9 subspecies are recognised:

  • sanctaemartae Zimmer, JT, 1948   -  Northern Colombia (Santa Marta massif).
  • personatus Gould, 1842   -  Subtropical montane zones of northern Colombia and western Venezuela, and central and eastern Andes of Colombia south to eastern Peru.
  • assimilis Gould, 1846   -  Western Andes of Colombia, western Ecuador and north-western Peru.
  • temperatus (Chapman, 1923)   -  Humid temperate zone of central and eastern Andes of Colombia and Ecuador.
  • duidae Chapman, 1929   -  South-central Venezuela (Amazonas and north-western Bolí­var).
  • ptaritepui Zimmer, JT & Phelps, 1946   -  South-eastern Bolí­var on Ptaritepui and others.
  • roraimae (Chapman, 1929)   -  South-eastern Bolí­var on various cerros, and Roraiman part of Guyana.
  • heliothrix Tschudi, 1844   -  Temperate zone of Peru.
  • submontanus Todd, 1943   -  Andes of south-eastern Peru (Puno) and Bolivia (including Chuquisaca).
