Subspecies
Forms a superspecies with Pale-billed Woodpecker (Campephilus guatemalensis) and Guayaquil Woodpecker (Campephilus gayaquilensis). Possibly conspecific with Guayaquil Woodpecker (Campephilus gayaquilensis). Subspecies intergrade quite extensively; birds from southern half of range formerly grouped together as subspecies albirostris.
The following 3 subspecies are recognised:
malherbii Gray, GR, 1845 - Western Panama east to northern and central Colombia.
melanoleucos (Gmelin, 1788) - East of Andes, from Colombia east to Trinidad and north-eastern Brazil, south to Bolivia, Paraguay, northern and north-eastern Argentina and Mato Grosso.
cearae (Cory, 1915) - Eastern and southern Brazil.
