Subspecies
Named subspecies angustus (R Tapajós, Brazil) regarded as synonymous with occidentalis, which intergrades with nominate.
The following 3 subspecies are recognised:
occidentalis (Hargitt, 1889) - North-eastern Ecuador, south-eastern Colombia and western and central Amazonian Brazil east to southern Venezuela, and south to eastern Peru, northern Bolivia and Mato Grosso. Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Amazonian Black-breasted Woodpecker (Celeus occidentalis).
torquatus (Boddaert, 1783) - Eastern Venezuela and the Guianas south to Pará in north-eastern Brazil.
tinnunculus (Wagler, 1829) - Eastern Brazil (south-eastern Bahia, Espírito Santo). Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Atlantic Black-breasted Woodpecker (Celeus tinnunculus).
