Habitat
Subtropical and tropical dry grassland and shrubland, temperate grassland. From sea-level - 2,800 m.
Canada (B), Mexico, USA (B).
Breeds in Canada (from southern British Columbia and north-central Alberta east to south-western Ontario) and southern in western USA (east to Michigan, western Iowa and western Texas) to Mexico (south to northern Baja California, Sonora and central plateau in Guanajuato); in winter extends farther southern into Mexico and eastern in USA to R Mississippi and the Gulf Coast.

Estimated population is 32,000,000 (2010).

Subspecies
Closely related to Eastern Meadowlark (Sturnella magna ).
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
neglecta Audubon, 1844 - South-western and south-central Canada through the western USA to central Mexico.
confluenta Rathbun, 1917 - South-western and central British Columbia to western Idaho and southern California.
