Subspecies
Initially named as Mtacilla longicauda, but that name invalid, as preoccupied. May form a superspecies with Grey Wagtail (Motacilla cinerea). Subspecies chapini possibly inseparable from torrentium.
The following 3 subspecies are recognised:
chapini Amadon, 1954 - South-western Mali, southern Sierra Leone, Liberia and western Ivory Coast, and from south-eastern Nigeria and Cameroon south to Gabon and east to Central African Republic and northern and southern PRCongo. Also Bioko I (Fernando Póo).
clara Sharpe, 1908 - Highlands of Ethiopia.
torrentium Ticehurst, 1940 - Eastern Uganda, central and southern Kenya, and from eastern and southern DRCongo, Rwanda and north-western and northern Tanzania south to central and south-western Angola (south to Namibe), Zambia, northern Zimbabwe and western Mozambique, also in mountains of eastern South Africa and Swaziland.
