Subspecies
Has been thought to form a superspecies with Sclater's Lark (Spizocorys sclateri), but usually considered closer to Botha's Lark (Spizocorys fringillaris). Geographical variation broadly clinal. Several subspecies possibly not sustainable. Birds from far south of range named as subspecies transiens and others from north-eastern South Africa as griseovinacea, both regarded as indistinguishable from nominate.

The following 6 subspecies are recognised:

makawai (Traylor, 1962) - Western Zambia (Liuwa and Mutala Plains).
harti (Benson, 1964) - South-western Zambia (Matabele Plain).
damarensis Roberts, 1922 - Northern Namibia and north-western Botswana.
crypta (Irwin, 1957) - North-eastern Botswana (Makgadikgadi Pan and L Dow).
barlowi Roberts, 1942 - Southern Namibia, southern Botswana and north-western South Africa (Northern Cape).
conirostris (Sundevall, 1850) - South Africa (Northwest Province east to Mpumulanga and western KwaZulu-Natal, south to Free State and eastern Cape) and north-western Lesotho.
