Subspecies
Has been thought possibly to form a superspecies, and even perhaps to be conspecific, with Black-faced Babbler (Turdoides melanops) and Dusky Babbler (Turdoides tenebrosa).
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
reinwardtii (Swainson, 1831) - Senegal east to Mali and Sierra Leone.
stictilaema (Alexander, 1901) - Northern Ivory Coast, southern Burkina Faso and Ghana east to Cameroon, southern Chad, west-central and southern Central African Republic and extreme northern DRCongo.
