The two appear to meet in south-eastern Nigeria (Cross River National Park region) and south-western Cameroon (Takamanda Forest Reserve). Species name sometimes given as canicapilla, but genus is masculine, and in any case this species name is invariable.
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
morelorum Érard, 1991 - Western Gambia and south-western Senegal.
canicapillus (Hartlaub, 1854) - Guinea-Bissau east to south-eastern Nigeria (also isolated population on Jos Plateau) and extreme south-western Cameroon (Takamanda).
