Subspecies
Genus often merged with Hirundo, but DNA studies support retention of separate taxa. Forms a species group with Rufous-chested Swallow (Cecropis semirufa). Subspecies saturatior intergrades with nominate in Sudan and with monteiri in south-eastern Kenya (area between Nairobi and Mombasa).
The following 3 subspecies are recognised:
senegalensis (Linnaeus, 1766) - Extreme southern Mauritania and Senegambia east to northern Ghana, northern Nigeria, northern Cameroon, southern Chad and south-western Sudan.
saturatior (Bannerman, 1923) - Southern Ghana east to southern Cameroon, southern Sudan and Ethiopia and south to PR Congo, northern DRCongo, Burundi and northern and southern Kenya.
monteiri (Hartlaub, 1862) - Angola and southern DRCongo east to southern Kenya, south to northern Namibia, northern Botswana, Zimbabwe, Mozambique and extreme north-eastern South Africa.
