Habitat
Open dry savannas, grasslands, swamps, riverbanks, lake shores and receding pools where fish are concentrated2. Typically forages in and around fishing villages.

Nest
A structure composed of sticks, located in trees, on cliffs or on buildings in towns and villages, about 10 - 30 m above the ground. In colonies of single or mixed-species groups.
Subspecies
Formerly included in Greater Adjutant (Leptoptilos dubius), with which forms superspecies.
