Subspecies
Forms superspecies with Tawny-collared Nightjar (Antrostomus salvini) and Yucatan Nightjar (Antrostomus badius), all sometimes being considered conspecific. Subspecies saltarius of Rufous Nightjar (Antrostomus rufus) initially thought to belong in present species, but might alternatively be separate species or merely colour morph of subspecies rutilus of Rufous Nightjar (Antrostomus rufus).
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
mengeli (Dickerman, 1975) - Northern Brazil, northern Peru and north-western Bolivia.
